Q&A with Photographer Juan Loza
We wanted to gain a deeper understanding of Juan's work, his creative process, and how he selects his subjects while exploring for Southwestern photography compositions.
In your opinion, what makes the Southwest desert such a powerful visual subject?
When I started photography in 2010, the desert was my first subject. What attracted me most were the tall saguaro cacti, which have become a strong subject of mine. In my opinion, the saguaro is one of the most powerful elements because it gives dimension to the landscape, most of the desert plants are low, and the mountains sit in the background.
Second is the color. The Southwest is often seen as dull or brown, with dark, empty spaces. But during certain times of the year, you can find surprising bursts of color, flowering cacti, vibrant fruits. That’s a big plus because those moments are rarely seen by the human eye. And if you're able to capture wildlife, that adds action and energy. People think of the desert as lifeless, but it’s actually full of life.
How do you decide when a scene is ready to be captured?
I often hike multiple times through some of these places until I see what I want to photograph. A lot of it depends on going at the right time of day to catch the right lighting. I follow a few personal rules:
First, stand in the right place, explore different angles depending on your subject and the story you want to tell the viewer.
Second, study the lighting. Take photos in different conditions until you feel you’ve captured what you wanted.
Third, take the shot. By that point, you should feel confident with your technical ability, but I always double-check and take a few shots using different settings.
What message do you hope collectors take away from your work?
To anyone who already owns one of my photographs, thank you. It means I’ve captured something that stirred your emotions. For new collectors looking at my work, I’d say: take a moment to sit back, critique it, and see if it evokes any kind of response.
When I travel or hike in search of a photograph, I’m always looking for a unique landscape, something that offers serenity, spirituality, or makes you reflect on who we are in this world. Where do we stand as humans on this planet? I also want to tell a story about the subject or the location. My goal is to bring people to places that evoke peace, a visual reminder to slow down and reflect.
